My week at We Are Futures
Written by Matilda Wilson from The London Oratory School.
I came to We Are Futures in order to understand the working environment and whether or not a job in this industry would be suitable for me. Throughout the week I got assigned to different projects with different job roles within the company in order to get a full scope of what the agency does.
First day in the office: Monday began with an introduction to the company and the office; we received a health and safety briefing and established our objectives for the week. We were assigned a Youth Digest project in which we had to research recent news stories that could be related to youth and how brands could tackle the problems that arose. This task was assigned to us through an online meeting where we learned how to access meetings in different formats. It was also in this meeting that we learnt how to make a hyperlink, a very simple task for some, but a skill that proved to be very useful with all our other projects throughout the week.
A day full of meetings: On Tuesday we received feedback which we requested for our Youth Digest project and began implementing this. We took part in a focus group with the Senior Strategist and took notes on the matters raised by the children in the focus group. This was an interesting task due to doing business studies at a-levels and therefore being able to see the theory in practice.
Team meeting day: On Wednesday, we got briefed on a marketing and communications task and had to make a PowerPoint with our findings in accordance with the styles and fonts used by the company in order to match their branding. We also sat in the team’s weekly ‘Here’s Where We’re Going’ meeting in which we had to introduce ourselves to the company, both online and in person. This used pubic speaking skills and helped improve my confidence, a skill which is transferable to life.
Last full day: Finally, on Thursday we implemented the feedback we received for our marketing and communications task and began working on the client services task set up for us by the Senior Account Executive. For this task we had to create an excel spreadsheet with all the information that we gathered, a skill that we had never done before but quicky learnt. We also continued our New Business task in which we had to research what different brands do in order to support children’s education / support parents with resources for their children.
I learnt lots of different things this week from the basics with hyperlinks and excel spreadsheets, to more difficult and industry specific tasks such as tailoring marketing and communications task to a specific brand. The whole team was so friendly right from the beginning and made it a comfortable workspace to be in, where I felt able to ask for help and feedback with the tasks assigned to me.
Spending a week with the agency has taught me many transferable skills which I will bring with me in future employment as well as life in general.
